Blessed Kuriakose Elias Chavara (A short History)

Blessed Kuriakose Elias Chavara was born on 10 February 1805 in Kainakary, Alappuzha District of Kerala. After the primary education inspired by the desire to become a priest he began the studies under the parish priest in Chennankary and then joined Pallippuram Seminary in Cherthala under Malpan Thomas Palackal. In those days there was no seminary like we have now. While he was in the seminary his father, mother and brother died because of Chicken pox. There was no one to look after his home. He handed over the home to his one sister and went back to the seminary. He was ordained priest in 1829 November29 at Arthunkal St. Andrew’s Church. Kuriakose Elias Chavara was the first Superior General of CMI congregation. He died on January 3 1871.

Mannanam was the first house of the CMI Congregation of which the foundation stone was laid on 11 May 1831 by Fr. Thomas Palackal, Fr. Thomas Porukkara and blessed Kuriakose Elias Chavara. Preaching the word was central to the mission of the Mannanam Community. This community was known as spiritual movement. Mannanam was not merely the birthplace of the indigenous religious congregation it was also the birth place of many other firsts: the first indigenous seminary of the Malabar Church (1833), the first Catholic Sanskrit School in Kerala (1846), the first Catholic Printing Press in Kerala (1846), In 1849 the fathers at Mannanam were declared by the then vicar apostolic. (Bp. Ludivic Martini) as preachers of the word in the parishes.

In 1855 Bl. Kuriakose Elias Chavara took the vows first and 10 other priests also took the vows before Bl. Chavara. They were called the Servants of Mary Immaculate of Mount Carmel.

The fathers at Mannanam felt that promotion of education was very important for the development of the Church and for the transformation of the society. Even though the English education was introduced in Kerala by the Church Mission Society, most of the people especially the poor and the downtroden were not getting the facility for the education.

Blessed Chavara found that without proper education none of his efforts for the renewal of the Church and the transformation of the society would be effective. He understood the importance of Sanskrit in the cultural background of our country. Hence he established the Sanskrit School at Mannanam. He welcomed the students irrespective of caste and creed.

The pioneering works of Bl. Chavara were not merely in the field of education. So also he felt the need for a printing press for Catholic Church. Blessed Chavara was able to establish a printing press (Wooden Press) in 1846 at Mannanam and many spiritual books were printed in this.

There is no area of human endeavor where the fingers of Blessed Chavara have not touched. The first indigenous religious congregation, Carmelites of Mary Immaculate (CMI) in 1831, the first Indian congregation for women, Congregation of Mother Carmel (CMC) in 1866, the first liturgical calendar in the Syro Malabar Church in 1862 which continued to be in use until the recent years. It was through his efforts syriac was first printed in Kerala and the first prayer books in Malayalam were printed at Mannanam under his care. Bl. Chavara was appointed as the first Vicar General.

Besides the first house at Mannanam he started several religious houses in different parts of Kerala. Elthuruth, Vazhakulam, Ambazhakkad, Mutholy, Pulinkunnu and Koonammavu. Starting of Seminaries for the education and formation of clergy, annual retreat for priests and people, starting of forty — hours adoration, a house for the dying and destitute, special attention to catechumens were among the few various activities under Blessed Chavara’s leadership. Above all he was a man of Holiness.

Welcome to Mannanam to receive the blessings of Bl. Kuriakose Elias Chavara praying at the Tomb
